What does a shower filter actually do?
A shower filter treats water at one outlet. It normally fits between the water supply and shower hose, or is built into the shower head. Water passes through one or more filter media before reaching you.
Depending on the design, those stages may be intended to catch sediment or reduce chlorine and particular metals. Common materials include mesh screens, calcium sulphite, activated carbon and copper-zinc media. A long list of stages is not proof of performance, though. Will a shower filter stop limescale?
Do not assume it will. A standard shower filter does not normally remove dissolved calcium and magnesium, so the water can remain hard after filtration.
Some shower products contain scale-inhibiting or conditioning media. These are intended to change how scale forms or sticks rather than remove the hardness minerals themselves. That can be useful, but it is a different claim from “softens water” or “eliminates limescale”. The result may also vary with the local water, temperature and flow.
