Lead (Pb)
A toxic heavy metal that accumulates in the body over time, primarily affecting the nervous system. Particularly dangerous for children, where even low levels can impair cognitive development and reduce IQ. There is no known safe level of exposure.
Lead pipes and solder joints in older plumbing systems (pre-1970s), industrial discharge, some brass fittings and taps. Lead dissolves more readily in soft, acidic water.
Neurological damage (especially in children), developmental delays, kidney damage, high blood pressure, reproductive problems.
Most common in properties built before 1970. Cities with older housing stock — Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, parts of London — have the highest prevalence of lead pipes. Soft water areas (Wales, Scotland, North West England) increase dissolution risk. In December 2024, the DWI advisory group recommended tightening the UK limit to 5 µg/L.
